There are so many way to sow seeds – direct in soil, paper towel, shot glass soak, coco, sandpaper, H2o2, and so on. But, which one is the best! Find out in this grueling seedling germination experiment using 6 of the most common ways to germinate seeds! This video is the 1st of a 3-part series.
A VERY big thank you to North Atlantic Seed Co / Dirty Bird Genetics & Visionary Hydroponics (Hydrobucket) for donating the materials for this experiment!

The seeds used for this experiment were Sour Lime Haze from Dirty Bird genetics. Get ’em over at North Atlantic Seed Co!
In this video I’ll show you how to mix masterblend nutrients correctly and how to run a sterile reservoir using common (and cheap) pool shock. This mixture can also be used in the AC Infinity self watering bases so make sure to check that video out too!
Masterblend synthetic nutrients has been my go-to for about a year now. I’ve used MB in everything from water (DWC Hydro) to soil to coco coir. As an added bonus, I love how there is no dye in MB and there is zero powder (particles) floating around the air when you open the bag. Read more @ masterblend.com.
Popular recipe for 5 gallons water: 12 grams Masterblend, 12 grams calcium, 6 grams epsom salt.
Alternative recipe (from masterblend.com) For 1 gallon water: 2.4 grams masterblend/calcium 1.5 grams epsom. Download the mixing chart above!
About the N-P-K of Masterblend’s Tomato formula: You’ll notice the N-P-K is 4-18-38 only when using this by itself. When mixing in the Calcium Nitrate & Magnesium Sulfate it does NOT equal 19.5-18-38. I spoke to 2 different Masterblend reps on the phone and they both confirmed – you need to divide the NPK numbers because it goes by weight. The actual NPK when using all 3 products (at a normal 2:1 ratio) comes out to 8-7-15.
The ingredients of the pool shock I use are 52% calcium hypochlorite & 48% other ingredients. Other mixtures may work, I have not tried them.
To make the pool shock solution: Add 1 gram of pool shock to 1 gallon of water and dissolve thoroughly. (Or .1 gram per 12 ounces water). This solution is what you will add into your nutrient mix at the recommended dosage per the mixing chart download above. e.g. to sterilize a 5 gallon mixture, add 30 milliliters of the pool shock solution. The AC Infinity Self Watering Bases work! But they’re not for everybody. These bases are great for those who frequently go on vacation, office plants, or any other plant that drinks synthetic nutrients or plain water. Experiences haven’t been great when using large fabric bags and organic nutrients. Read on!

What’s the difference between FoxFarm’s Ocean Forest and Happy Frog soils? Can you germinate hot pepper seeds in Ocean Forest and Happy Frog? Do you need to fertilize when using these soils? Find out in this 3 month study! I compared these two FoxFarm soils against Espoma Garden Soil and top soil.
Making sure your soil has the right PH is important to allow your plants to absorb the proper nutrients.
The Chart
I’m sure you have all seen this chart before. It demonstrates the types of nutrients that your plant will not be able to absorb if the soil falls outside the ideal PH range.
